These paintings are not about familiar landscapes or objects, but rather they explore the terrain of the heart. I begin with an idea or feeling, but avoid controlling what happens next. From the first splash of color, I ask the painting where it wants to go - and thus the end result is unknown to me until its own mystery unfolds.
The greatest challenge is to get out of my own way and allow the painting to speak. I am at my best when I remain loose, even playful - resulting in a clearing where there is no separation between me and the work - where there is an "allowing" for the painting to come through. Much like a jazz musician, I am but a vehicle for spirit to manifest in color and form.
The interplay of color and texture awakens me ... how they can give form to the ineffable, shedding light on what is seductive but unseen. Each painting has several layers, and is transformed many times using common and uncommon tools alike: everything from brushes and sponges, feather dusters and cloth, to fingers and nails, scrapers and combs. My tools for painting are unlimited.
Though my experience of painting is contemplative and personal, like a meditation, I've discovered the images that emerge are surprisingly universal, even archetypal. I'm fascinated how people can find their own experience reflected in the images I paint. I'd love to hear what you see in yourself through my paintings.
